East meets West at Mommi

Clapham High Street isn’t the first place I’d think of if someone told me to suggest a date place. The classic Nandos? Tuesday KFC deals? Bumping and grinding at Infernos? Swipe right…? I don’t think so.

Mommi, however, is a more than acceptable date place slap bang in the middle of the high street. The Japanese-Peruvian restaurant is sophisticated in decor and the food is creative, seasonal, first-rate and beautifully presented.

It tastes even better when you go on a Sunday and Monday when the Chef’s Set Menu is half price at only £12.50pp – for eight dishes!

Plus it’s a great option if you can’t be bothered to sift through the menu and just want the plates to keep on coming, which is exactly what happened.

First up there was the padron peppers in sea salt (classic!), something to nibble on. Then dishes from the raw bar – salmon and avocado on a bed of rice, and tuna, kumquat and watermelon ceviche. As a ceviche super fan I died at this point.

The mains from the robata grill followed – chicken teriyaki (another classic!), and some refreshing Japanese potato salad with grilled mushrooms.

It didn’t stop there. Chunks of braised pork belly topped off the savoury part of our meal, while our ‘happy ending’ was the honey roast plantain and sweet potato.

And if you’re wondering if your date is going to text back for another meet up, fear not. You can whisper all your concerns to the little worry dolls that are given out free at the end of the meal with the bill.

The menu is extremely good value for money especially if you go when it’s half priced. But if you choose to go on a Friday, say, happy hour is from 10:30pm to midnight. That’s 2 for 1 cocktails.

Or fancy a dinner and movie combo? Mommi also does that for just £20pp, with films showing at the nearby Clapham Picturehouse.

Date factor: great for 100th dates, mates dates, cheap dates
Price: from £12.50pp for set menu
Getting there: 5 minutes from Clapham North
