Dinner by Heston

Dinner: the main meal of the day, taken either around midday or in the evening. A formal evening meal, typically one in honour of a person or an event.

We were looking for a reason to splash out at Dinner by Heston Blumenthal. It’s expensive by my standards, located in swanky Knightsbridge, but not over-priced, and one thousand times worth it. Especially because we did have an event to celebrate – our two-year anniversary!

My date had been a few times before and had always raved about Heston’s but when I looked up the menu, only a couple of things jumped out at me straight away. It wasn’t a case of “I have to have everything!” Maybe I was concerned about the prices too much, or didn’t understand half of the ingredients on the menu…

But I can say that after our visit, I would definitely like to return to try absolutely everything!

The staff were incredibly welcoming and asked if we were here for a special occasion. I thought they were just making small talk but no, we were given a surprise chocolate mousse that had “Happy anniversary” written across the plate, after our dessert. Two puddings – my idea of heaven!

I will admit that while I loved the whole experience, I felt I ordered wrong and got food envy for both starter and main. First off, I had the frumenty – grilled octopus in smoked sea broth with lovage and spelt – which was good, but my date’s meat fruit was exceptional.

The meat fruit is one of Dinner’s signature dishes and I initially ordered that but decided against it. There was no point in both ordering the same starter, right? Wrong! It’s chicken liver parfait perfectly shaped to resemble a mandarin, served with grilled bread on the side. It was so light and refreshing, the mousse-like parfait was whipped to perfection.

Now I can see why the waiter must have silently cried after he recommended it to me and I went against his advice…

For mains I had the sea bass (why was I trying to be healthy?!) with mussel and seaweed ketchup, salmon roe and sea rosemary. It was delicious, but maybe not as satisfying as my date’s powdered duck breast – easily the best and most juicy duck breast I’ve tried.

We shared mashed potatoes, and carrots and caraway on the side – M&S’s ultimate mash eat your heart out!

For dessert we split the taffety tart – an apple, rose and fennel creation with the creamiest vanilla ice cream. Again, magnificently presented.

Some of the ingredients may sound odd when put together, but I’ve learnt that anything you order on the Dinner menu will be amazing, even my slightly healthier options.

We had a table right by the kitchen which we could look into thanks to the floor-to-glass windows. One chef had a cheeky nibble of something as he cooked – we can’t blame him!

I’ll be coming back to have my very own Meat Fruit now…
