On a warm, sunny day, swarms of Londoners descend upon Brighton, and I’m no exception. However, there’s more to Brighton than fish and chips on the beach, or a spin on the pier’s rides (though they are a pretty good reason to visit too). Here are my favourite picks.
There aren’t many day trips that lend themselves to bad weather. Braving the rides on Brighton Pier is best saved for a sunny day, so if you want to get out of London when the weather isn’t playing ball, head down to Chislehurst Caves.
Want to woo your date with a bunch of roses?
Warning: This is a date for early risers, not night owls.
London’s street food scene is mushrooming, and for the real London foodie in the know, Maltby Street market is a must.
Warning: non-beer drinkers need not read on.
For those who do enjoy the stuff, and craft beer in particular, this is definitely one you don’t want to miss. Meantime is one of London’s best craft beers, and we’re fortunate in that they open up their brewery to us in the form of their Meantime Brewery Tour.
The second or third date may usually call for a “day date”. Maybe you’re feeling more relaxed around each other and don’t want to go straight into boozing? Maybe you want to venture out of Zone 2 to somewhere off the beaten track?
Petersham Nurseries in Richmond is your answer. It’s easy to get to but is nothing like central London, so feels like you’ve ventured away for the day.
If someone told you there’s a juice bar in Covent Garden that charges you to bring your own bottle of booze to drink in their basement and places a 2-hour limit on your inebriation session, you probably wouldn’t be tempted.
BYOC stands for Bring Your Own Cocktail, and is essentially what I’ve described above, but a lot better.
